Different Types of Shoes during Pregnancy

There are many different types of shoes that a woman can wear on her feet during pregnancy that will help with the swelling, instability, and the changes in weight. Here are the most popular shoe choices:

  • ATHLETIC SHOES – If you are looking for a shoe with a non-skid surface bottom, that offers stability, and comfort, then an athletic shoe may be what you are looking for. Some athletic shoes also have ankle support and arch support. Some come with laces but many pull on for ease of not have to bend over as much. On the down side, they are full coverage so they may get too tight or too hot for tired and swollen feet.

  • PULL ON STYLE SHOES – Pregnant women everywhere rejoice over wearing a tennis shoe style pull on shoe that has no laces. These shoes have less support but normally don’t fully cover the foot so they are not as constricting as an athletic shoe. On the down side, because they don’t offer as much support, you can have pains such as from your back if you try to wear them for long periods of time.

  • DRESS SHOES – Heels shoes be restricted to a low heel in short amounts of time during pregnancy. Some women must wear them for work, parties, and other occasions during their pregnancies. Just because you are pregnant doesn’t mean that you have to totally skip the dress shoe. You just have to look for a shoe with arch and ankle support and skip a skinny heel. Look for a shoe with a chunkier heel that will give you a firmer foundation.

  • FLATS – Easy to put on and take off, flats can be dressy or very casual. Flats also offer the foot and ankle room to expand. Once again, the down side is that depending on the style of the flat, some styles offer less support than other styles. If you will be wearing for a long period of time, look for styles that offer arch and ankle support.

  • BOOTS – Boots are very stylish and should not be restricted to you just because you are pregnant. Finding the right one that is not a struggle to get on over enlarged calves and swollen ankles may be a challenge during pregnancy but once you find the right pair, you will be glad that you have. Boots offer great ankle support and can even help keep your feet and ankles warm.

  • SANDALS – Sandals can be one of the most forgiving shoes as they allow the feet to breathe and have more space. Most sandals are flat but some offer arch support that you can wear for a prolonged amount of time. There are some sandals that come buckle free but other models have buckles that may be an issue if you are having a hard time reaching your feet.

  • FLIP-FLOPS – You can get flip-flops in a giant range. While some of the less expensive ones offer no support what so ever, some of the higher-end flip-flops offer arch support and you are able to wear them for longer periods of time. Flip-flops are a pregnant woman’s best friend because your foot just slides in and you they allow your feet to expand and don’t mind if your ankles are swollen. They can be a trip hazard so make sure that they fit properly.

Things to Look For When Purchasing Shoes during Pregnancy

Before purchasing a shoe while pregnant, there are a few things that you will want to look for. Here is a list of the most common things to look for.

  • Support – Your arch is in the center of your foot. To help prevent foot pain, which can radiate up your body, choose shoes that offer arch support. If you are looking for a boot or another shoe that goes up your ankle, look for a shoe that also offers ankle support.

  • Ease of Putting on – Your belly is growing and your back hurts. So why make things more difficult on yourself? Choosing shoes that slip-on and don’t lace up or buckle up will save your back and save you the strain.

  • Low Heel – A high heel put more strain on your growing body and a ballet flat does not offer a lot of protection. The solution is to wear a low heel that offers stability and arch support.

  • Extra Room – It is almost a given that your feet will swell during pregnancy and as the day goes on. Consider purchasing shoes a half size to even a full size larger than your pre-pregnancy size.

  • Rubber Sole – Falling while pregnant is never a good thing. Rubber soles not only help you avoid slips and falls but they are great shock absorbers. Rubber soles can help alleviate joint discomfort that some associate with pregnancy.

  • Stylish – Just because you are pregnant does not mean that you can’t be a little bit stylish while you are at it.

Things to Know About Feet during Pregnancy

Footwear is very important during pregnancy and you should be very aware of what you wear on your feet during your pregnancy.

Here are a few reasons why you show pay extra attention to your footwear during your pregnancy:

  • WEIGHT INCREASE – During pregnancy, you will most likely put on weight and this will put more pressure on your feet and your joints. With the proper arch support from footwear, not only will your feet feel comfortable, but it can help with your posture and prevent pain in other parts of your body such as your back and hips.

  • GROWING FEET – During pregnancy, your feet may grow up to half a size. This change may or may not be permanent. You may not be able to continue to wear your old shoes as they may be too uncomfortable and tight.

  • SWELLING FEET – While you are pregnant, it is very common to retain water; especially in your ankles and feet. When your footwear is tight, it may be difficult to wear over swollen feet.

  • ACHES AND PAINS – With pregnancy comes pains that are common. Some of these can be alleviated or reduced with the proper footwear.

  • FALL RISKS – Your center of gravity shifts towards your stomach as it grows but your joints are looser and could knock you off your center and cause you to fall. By choosing shoes that are more sensible could help reduce your risk of falling.

  • HEEL HEIGHT – In addition, wearing shoes with a proper heel height is important; too high could also knock off your center and put undue pressure on your ankles and knees. A heel of no more than two inches should be worn during pregnancy.

The Winner

When choosing the best shoe to wear during pregnancy, you must look at several factors.  Do the shoes offer enough support? Is it easy to put on and take off? Is the heel the right height for me on most days? Do the shoes offer the extra room I need for my swollen ankle and feet? Does the sole meet the needs of the shoe and is it a style I can live with?

After looking at all of these questions, I firmly believe that the Skechers Women’s Sport Empire is the best shoe to wear during pregnancy.

This shoe has a soft flat knit fabric upper, is slip on, has stitching accents with stripe design, and has a zigzag stitched toe seam detail.

As Skechers is famous for, this shoe has an “S†logo on the side, while it is slip on, it has bungee lacing, and it has a padded tongue and collar.

The Sketchers Sport Empire has a Relaxed Fit design for a roomy fit that is comfortable, has a soft fabric shoe lining, has lightweight absorbing shock midsole, and the shoe has an Air Cooled Memory Foam Cushion comfort insole.

For a cool design, the shoe is contrast colored on the midsole for a stripe detail, the shoe offers a flexible traction outsole, the uppers of the shoes are flexible, they are light weight, and the Sketchers Sport is offered in a variety of sizes including wide and half sizes.

This shoe is versatile and can be worn with jeans, leggings, and much more. If you are looking for the best shoe to wear while pregnant, you can’t go wrong with this shoe.
