Types of Maternity Nursing Pillows

There are several types of nursing pillow. Let’s go over the most popular types:

  • C Shaped Nursing Pillows

This common nursing pillow allows the baby to fit in the middle of the pillow with the support on either side. Some arms of the pillows fit around the mother while others do not. Babies can use these types of pillows to be propped up in to aid in sitting up and they are great for tummy time.

  • Horseshoe Shaped Nursing Pillows

These are larger C shaped pillows that are great for twins or plus size mothers. They will allow for all the same things.

  • Enclosed Nursing Pillows

Nursing pillows that surround the mother offer full support and are easier to get the baby in position for latching on. However, they may not be appropriate for all size mothers.

  • Boomerang Nursing Pillows

This shape pillow allows the mother to put the pillow close to her breast without it having to wrap around her body. It is great for plus size mothers.

  • Triangle and Rectangle Shaped Nursing Pillows

These pillows are more like wedges that help elevate the baby up to the mother’s breast. You can also use them to help prop up the baby.

  • Arm Nursing Pillows

These nursing pillows are placed on the forearm and are great for nursing or bottle feeding. They are portable and make great pillows for traveling. However, they don’t have any other use.

Features of Nursing Pillows

When looking for a nursing pillow, you want to consider the features that mean the most to you and your baby. Here are some features that you may want to be on the lookout for.

  • Size – The size of the nursing pillow that you desire all depends on how you plan on using it. If you want on that is portable and can travel, then you want a small nursing pillow. If you want one that will fit twins, then you want an oversized nursing pillow. You may also be looking for one that is long or wide if that would fit your baby better.
  • Price – You can spend an outrageous amount of money on a nursing pillow if you are not careful. However, most nursing pillows run along the same range within $30 of each other. The expense is when you start looking at extra covers or upgrades.
  • Ability to be Washed – While some spills and accidents can be wiped clean, it is a plus if you can remove the slipcover and throw it in the washing machine. If your baby is prone to accidents, you will appreciate this. It is a bigger plus if the pillow is machine washable.
  • Style and Design – Many of the nursing pillows that are on the market today have slipcovers that are available in a wide range of colors, designs, and styles. So you should be able to find one that fits in with your décor without a problem.
  • Fit – Many nursing pillows fit around or against the body. You want it to fit comfortably and to fit at the right height so that when the baby latches on it does not add undue pressure to your back.
  • Pillow Height – When breastfeeding, you need a nursing pillow that hits at just the right spot so that the baby can latch on properly. If the pillow hits your midsection too low or high, the pillow will not work.
  • Multiple Uses – Some nursing pillows have other uses than just helping the mother with nursing and latching on. There are pillows that aid the baby in sitting up, allow the baby to be propped up, and can be used during tummy time. If you want a multiple use pillow, look for some of these features.

Other Things to Consider When Purchasing a Nursing Pillow

There are many things that you should consider when you are purchasing a nursing pillow. While some are just facts about nursing pillows, others are tips and tidbits about certain nursing pillows over others. This section is to help better inform you of nursing pillows.

  • When we talk about tummy time, we are talking about placing the baby on its stomach for a little bit of time every day. This is to help strengthen the baby’s neck muscles and will help the baby learn how to roll over, push, crawl, and strand. Nursing pillows help prop the baby up and can help the baby look around the room so that they can see everything that is going on in a room. Looking around can also distract him from any discomfort that he feels from being on his belly. Neck muscles are not strong enough to handle tummy time until the baby is three or four months old so do not do it before this time.
  • To use a nursing pillow, place it along your side, on your lap, or along your arm. Place the baby’s tummy toward your body with his feet under your arm. The pillow will do most of the supporting of the baby. Improper placement can cause gas problems.
  • Fastening straps are a feature on nursing pillows that you can choose to have or not have. Once you buckle the straps, the pillow will fit closely to your body. The best reason to choose a strap is that the strap keeps the pillow securely in place, you don’t have to keep adjusting the pillow, and you can hold the baby closer to your body. However, the straps make it difficult to get the pillow on and off. You can’t always get the straps on with one hand while holding a baby in the other hand and you can’t get the straps off in a hurry if you need to. The pillow does help relieve pressure off of the shoulders, neck, and back.
  • A nursing pillow is great because it frees up a mother’s hands while feeding to do other hand activities that need to be done such as read.
  • Some nursing pillows can aid babies in sitting up which will help develop muscles.
  • You need to use your nursing pillow safely. Never place your nursing pillow in a playpen or crib as it is a suffocation hazard. It is not safe for a baby to fall asleep on a nursing pillow; if they do fall asleep, transfer them to a crib. Do not place your baby’s face down on the nursing pillow. Always use adult supervision while your baby is using the nursing pillow.

Care Tips for Your Nursing Pillow

You will want to keep your nursing pillow as clean and sanitized as possible for your baby. Whether it can be washed or needs to be spot cleaned, here are some tips on the care of your nursing pillow.

Preventative Maintenance:

  • It is hard to keep things clean and laundry is done with a baby around. That is why you should have at least two covers for your nursing pillow – one for the pillow and one for the pillow when the other is in the wash.
  • Place a receiving blanket or cloth diaper on top of your nursing pillow to help catch stains. It is a lot easier to wash the diaper or blanket than to take off the cover all the time.
  • Make sure to spot clean or wash your pillow every two or three months for sanitation and maintenance reasons.

Washing Machine Tips:

  • Before you wash your nursing pillow, be sure to read the care instructions for the fabric.
  • Always use a scent free and gentle detergent that is not only gentle but safe for the pillow and your baby’s delicate skin.
  • To squeeze out extra moisture in the pillow, use a second spin cycle before you dry it.
  • To help get the moisture out of your pillow, help with the process of drying, and to aid in keeping the shape of your pillow, place a sock with two tennis balls in the dryer with the pillow.
  • For smelly nursing pillows, use a half cup of baking soda when you are doing your main wash to help neutralize any odors.
  • If your nursing pillow has mildew, moldy, or musty smell, one cup poured in of white vinegar to your wash will help with the odors.

Spot Cleaning Tips

  • If your nursing pillow cannot be machine washed, then you never want to submerge or soak the pillow. You will want to spray with an antimicrobial spray that will clean and deodorize your pillow at the same time while being safe. You can purchase one or make one homemade.

 Benefits of a Nursing Pillow

There are many benefits of using a nursing pillow. Here are just a few:

  • One of the reasons that a nursing pillow is so popular and favored by breastfeeding mothers is that nursing pillows simply make it easier to breastfeed. A nursing pillow can help you position the baby in the right position at the mother’s breast so that the baby has an easier time getting a good latch on the breast. A nursing pillow means that the mom has to work less getting the baby to latch on and the baby has a better experience.
  • Different nursing pillows help support mother and baby in different kinds of ways. A nursing pillow should help relieve the strain from a mother’s spine, neck, and arms. In addition, a nursing pillow can provide a baby with support for a long nursing session. Sometimes finding the right nursing pillow is hard and trying several is not always possible. It is always best to do your research on nursing pillows or contact the Breastfeeding Support Network for additional information or help. Another good source of information is to just ask friends and read reviews to see what other people think of a product.
  • If you have to have a C-Section, you will be very tender where the incision is. By placing the nursing pillow between you and the baby, it can help relieve some of the discomforts you would otherwise feel without one. A nursing pillow also provides support to your abdominal muscles and can help speed up the healing process.
  • It is vital for babies to be in the right position while they are eating. Nursing pillows can help with this whether they are breastfed or being feed by a bottle. To help a baby better develop their muscles, a nursing pillow encourages a baby to be more independent when being propped up. During tummy time, several of their muscle groups are strengthened as they use their legs and arms.

While I would not use this pillow as my main nursing pillow, I do believe that the Itzy Ritzy Milk Boss Infant Feeding Support Breast Feeding Pillow is a great nursing pillow to have for when you are on the go.

The Bebe Au Lait Premium Cotton Nursing Pillow has a lot of great qualities going for it. You can machine wash both the pillow and the pillow covers. Each side has a convenient pocket for incidentals. This affordable pillow has five luxury designs to choose from. The waist strap places the pillow at the right height for nursing – you can use it or place the straps in the side pockets and use the pillow without the straps. In addition, the pillow has two sides; it has a firm side that is flat or you can choose to use the plush side that is soft.

However, there are a couple of issues. The nursing pillow is so bulky and thick that some babies may sit too high to nurse comfortably. In addition, if you use the strap around your body, it may create a gap between your body and the baby.

Overall, the Bebe Au Lait Premium Cotton Nursing Pillow is a good nursing pillow. If you can get around the cons, then this pillow is a strong contender.
