Best Double StrollersWhether you have twins or an infant and a toddler or two small children, totting them around is hard. That is where a double stroller comes in handy. There are several types of double strollers out there that can accommodate two children, even those that can accommodate a child’s car seat.

A double stroller makes it easier to go to the mall, take a walk around the block, or take a trip to the zoo. It is also a way to keep your child in a safe place so they cannot run away from you in a crowd. While some double strollers are simple and lightweight, others can be more elaborate and have all the bells and whistles. Let’s take a look at some of the top models on the market today.

Types of Double Strollers

When it comes to deciding what the right double stroller is for your family, there are more choices out there on the market today than there ever was. Each type of double stroller has its own unique feature that may suit your family. Some of the double stroller types are tandem, sit and stand, umbrella, side-by-side, all-terrain, and jogging. Let’s take a look at each and how they would suit your needs.

Side-by-Side Strollers

This type of stroller, Side-by-Side, has two seats that are made to sit next to each other. Some of these strollers have the option of reclining seats so that your child can rest. This seating option also gives your children the option to interact with each other. Since the seats are side-by-side, both children get the same view and nobody has an obstructed view. It also makes it easy for the parent to reach each child.

Tandem Strollers

This type of stroller, a tandem stroller, has a front seat and a back seat for a total of two seats. Normally, the front seat can recline a few positions while the back seat can recline more and sometimes lie completely flat. This would be ideal where a toddler is in the front and an infant lies down in the back. This system also normally has the option of fitting up to two infant car seats for an array of configurations. Since the tandem is narrower, you can fit through more spaces easier. It is also easier to maneuver through crowds since you take up less space. Since you have so much weight in front, it might be harder to turn corners.

All Terrain Strollers

This type of stroller, an all-terrain stroller, is for people who like to go off-road or take long walks but not really jog. Some may consider this a sports utility type of stroller. This type of stroller will have three wheels with two in the back and one swivel in the front that can lock for stability.

Sit and Stand Strollers

This type of stroller, the sit and stand stroller, is great for parents who have a toddler who wants to walk part of the time and does not want to be put in a traditional stroller and you also have another child in the stroller – probably a little one. Your toddler can stand up when they want to and when they need to, they can sit on a bench without feeling like they are in a baby stroller. This type of stroller is normally lighter and more compact than a traditional tandem stroller which makes it easier to store and maneuver. A great added bonus is you can use the platform area as storage when it is not in use. So you can continue to use this stroller even when your toddler has outgrown it.

Umbrella Stroller

This type of stroller, an umbrella stroller, has curved double handles and folds easily. These double strollers are the smallest, lightest and simplest double strollers out there. These strollers have vinyl or cloth seats and very few features. Most people like these type of strollers because they are easy at gate checks, take up little room in the trunk, and are lightweight. However, a child must be at least six months old to sit in an umbrella stroller as most models do not recline.

Joggers

This type of stroller, the jogger, is great for family activities. This type of double stroller normally has three wheels that are bicycle style so you can go fast with them. Not only can you jog with them, but walk and go off-road or on surfaces that are uneven. However, because of the fixed front wheel, maneuvering can be difficult. Joggers do maneuver easily over uneven roads due to the all-wheel or rear suspension. Double joggers also have hand brakes which is a great safety feature to have in any model. Check out some of the best double jogging strollers here.

Things to Consider When Purchasing a Double Stroller

Before you purchase a double stroller, you need to take several things into consideration. Here are just a few.

  • When deciding on a double stroller, think about how you would use it and how you would configure it. Some models of strollers can only be configured one way – such as most umbrella double strollers. While other strollers allow you to configure the stroller for infants, toddlers, and a mix of both. Some strollers only allow you to put infant car seats one way while others allow you to put them in an array of configurations. Take into consideration the flexibility that you want and need before you make your final decision on a double stroller. Also, make sure that the stroller you pick will be good for the long haul as you want one for longevity.
  • Because manufacturers try to keep the size and weight of the double strollers down, they sometimes compromise on the comfort of the seat. But there strollers out there between bulky, heavy strollers with comfortable seats and lightweight, strollers with uncomfortable seats. Look for seats that recline, have padding, are made with quality materials, and have great reviews. Also look for seats that are a little wider, as narrow seats can be uncomfortable for toddlers.
  • Take into consideration the weight and size of the double stroller. A double stroller won’t do you a bit of good if you can’t fit through doorways or have to beg your way through lines and crowds. And don’t get me started about not being able to lift it into the back end of a car. All of this needs to be considered before making that final decision.
  • Consider the size of your trunk. Now think of the folded dimensions on your dream double stroller. Will it fit and still leave you room for a diaper bag or a shopping bag or two? And be realistic. You have to think about the handlebars and you want the trunk to close! Sometimes a folded double stroller won’t even fit in the back of a small SUV. So how do they expect it to fit in the back of a car trunk?
  • If you are going to use one or more infant car seats with your new double stroller, you want to make sure that it is compatible with the make and model of your infant car seat before you purchase the double stroller. The best way to do this is by using a universal car seat adapter on the stroller. Check the stroller to make sure that it will work before purchasing.

Safety Precautions When Using a Double Stroller

According to the Mayo Clinic, you must use care to keep your children safe when using a stroller. Here are some tips.

  • Do not leave your children unattended when they are in their stroller.
  • If you want to hang toys from your stroller bar to entertain them, you need to make sure that all of the toys are fastened securely.
  • You must always buckle your children’s safety belt or harness when they are in their double stroller.
  • When you stop your stroller, always engage the brakes on your double stroller – even if you are only stopping for a short period of time.
  • Hanging bags from the handlebars from the stroller can make the stroller tip over; so always store bags and other belongings in the storage compartment of the stroller.
  • Do not have your child near when you open and close the stroller as babies fingers can get caught or pinched in the hinges of the stroller. Make sure that the stroller is always locked open into place before placing your children into it.
  • Do not place the stroller, with your children in it, in the sun for any length of time as metal and plastic can heat quickly and burn your children. If you must be in the sun for any length of time, be sure to check the surface of the stroller to make sure it is not too hot before placing your child in the stroller.
  • Recalls can happen at any time. That is why you should always return your warranty card on your stroller so you will be notified in case there is ever a recall. You can also check for recalls on the Consumer Product Safety Commission Website

Keeping your baby safe is not hard, it just takes using some common sense. Follow the above guidelines and always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines when it comes to weight and safety. If you follow these guidelines, you are sure to keep your little ones safe when using a double stroller.

8. Summer Infant 3Dtwo Double Convenience Stroller

Summer Infant 3Dtwo Double Convenience Stroller, Gray Squared

(Although it is only to one position about 10 degrees.) The five-point harnesses are padded. The canopies block 99.9 percent of UVA and UVB rays. (However, the front canopy gets in the way of the back rider.)

All the being said, this stroller has quite a few things wrong with it. This stroller is super flimsy and cannot withstand two children.
