Prosecutors Say Teacher Seduced Other Boys
Judge says defendant a threat to self, others, rejects bail cut
When Hastings teacher Julie F. had sex with a sophomore student last
year, it wasn't the first time she had seduced a teen-ager at the school,
prosecutors say.
They told a Dakota County judge Monday that during the past 2 1/2 years Julie F.
tried to have sex with two different male students: inviting them to movies,
fondling them and professing her love for them.
She was arrested last month for allegedly having sex on 20 occasions with a
third student, a then 15-year-old sophomore she calls her "soul mate."
The allegations of her desire for young men were made public during a bail
hearing Monday morning in a Hastings courtroom.
Wearing a new pair of black-rimmed eyeglasses and a blue prison uniform,
Julie F. smiled as she made her second court appearance after being charged last
month with first- and third-degree criminal sexual conduct....
Court documents allege the first sexual assault occurred during the summer of
1995 with a 16-year-old male student in Julie F.'s English class. She allegedly
took him to Valleyfair Family Amusement Park in Shakopee and told the boy
that she was falling in love with him.
After visiting the amusement park, according to the documents, they went to a
movie. During the movie, Julie F. placed the boy's hand on her breast and used
her hands to caress him through his pants, according to documents. After
the movie, Julie F. took the teen home and told him not to tell anyone.
Julie F. invited a different teen-ager to watch movies at her Hastings home in
October 1997, documents say. Julie F.'s husband and 8-year-old son were not at
home.
According to court documents, they watched "The Piano" and "Like Water
for Chocolate," two movies about women who cannot obtain the men they
desire. During the movies, she dimmed the lights and played with the boy's
hair and held his hands. Then, she confessed her love for him only to have
him say he did not love her, documents say.
Backstrom said investigators learned of the two earlier incidents after Julie F. was
charged with sexually assaulting her student. She will not be charged with the
earlier encounters, but they will be used as evidence during a criminal trial to
establish Julie F.'s guilt, he said.
Julie F. denies the 1995 sexual encounter, said her attorney, Michael Cromett.
More troubling for authorities and the parents of her alleged sexual partner,
Julie F. recently told her parents that she plans to have a relationship with her
"soul mate" in two years when he turns 18, Theisen said.
Her relationship with the boy, now age 16, started when he began baby-sitting
for Julie F.'s son. Soon Julie F. and the student were eating dinners out, seeing
movies together and having sex, court documents say. Julie F. admitted to police
that two had exchanged silver wedding bands and that she had planned their
wedding with invitations and a wedding dress.
Julie F. was fired from her teaching post by the Hastings school board on Feb.
