NJ baby-snatcher bought baby boy balloon

PATERSON, NEW JERSEY - A 16-year-old New Jersey girl accused of stealing a baby from a hospital apparently bought a balloon with the words "Baby Boy" at the hospital gift shop shortly before kidnapping the child. Police said at a recent court hearing that she intended to give it to the mother of the child she planned to take. The girl, who is not being identified because of her age, then went around the obstetrics ward at Saint Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center looking for baby boys. Police say the girl accused of taking the baby struck up a conversation with Josephine Smith P., bought Smith a pack of cigarettes and offered to watch 2-day-old Kron while Smith smoked one in the bathroom. After telling Smith to turn on the shower to disguise the smoke, the girl left with the baby, leaving behind the balloon. The baby was recovered later that night.
